A 43-Year-Old Tifton Man Dies in Catastrophic Pedestrian Accident

A 43-year-old Tifton man sustained fatal injuries in a Florida pedestrian accident. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Tifton man was walking across the southbound lanes of US Highway 41 near Jamaica Bay Boulevard in Fort Myers, Florida before being struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle. The accident happened in the late evening hours when visibility may have been low.

Following the fatal pedestrian accident, a Lieutenant with the Florida Highway Patrol stated that similar pedestrian accidents happen “all too often,” and that drivers must be “mentally checked into what” they are doing when getting behind the wheel. The Lieutenant further stated that when drivers leave home, they “should anticipate [they are] going to see a pedestrian.”

What Are Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents?

Many pedestrian accidents, like most motor vehicle accidents, are preventable with responsible behavior from both drivers and pedestrians. Sharing the roadway means expecting that pedestrians will, at some point, have to cross busy streets, and all motorists must be aware of when to expect pedestrians in their path.

Pedestrian accidents happen for a variety of reasons, with the most common reasons including the following:

  • Driver or pedestrian inattention, such as looking at a phone or texting rather than looking at the road and surroundings;
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including some prescription drugs;
  • Failing to yield to pedestrians at a crosswalk;
  • Running a red light or failing to stop at a stop sign; and
  • Speeding.

All accidents are unique and may not fall under the common types of accidents seen daily throughout Georgia. In some cases, weather conditions may be to blame for the root cause of an accident. Without consulting with a Tifton pedestrian accident lawyer, it can be difficult to know whether any potentially viable claims exist to pursue legal action for personal injuries.

The Severity of Pedestrian Accident Injuries

Without the protection of an enclosed vehicle, pedestrians are at a greater risk of sustaining catastrophic injuries if they are struck by a vehicle. The impact of a collision may cause a pedestrian to be thrown across the road, placing the pedestrian in greater harm from oncoming traffic. Although not all pedestrian accidents are fatal, a substantial number of pedestrian accident victims pass away from their injuries.

Because of the severity of pedestrian accident injuries, a wise decision would be to speak with a Tifton pedestrian accident lawyer to discuss potential legal claims stemming from an accident that resulted in debilitating injuries.
